Industrial Protective Coating Selection Checklist

A coating model should be the result of a defined service review, not its starting point. Use this checklist to collect the substrate, exposure, protection objective, existing condition, access and verification information needed to screen system routes and identify questions that still require project evidence.

Define the selection boundary and decision owner

Identify the exact equipment, surface and work boundary under review. Separate internal and external faces, process-side and atmospheric exposure, insulated and uninsulated areas, and zones with different access or maintenance duties.

Record who provides process information, who accepts the substrate, who approves the coating system and who will inspect the work. A recommendation cannot be evaluated consistently when ownership of these inputs is unclear.

Record substrate and existing-system evidence

Describe what is present before discussing a replacement system. Photographs should identify location and scale, while drawings or marked sketches should show boundaries that photographs cannot explain.

  • Identify the substrate and any lining, cladding, insulation or existing coating.
  • Record welds, edges, joints, fasteners, penetrations and dissimilar materials.
  • Distinguish sound retained areas from cracked, blistered, chalked, detached or corroded zones.

Note active leakage, structural loss, unstable repairs and surfaces that cannot be reached for preparation or inspection. These conditions may prevent coating work or require another discipline to act first.

Characterize the real exposure mechanism

Use operating records and site observations to describe what contacts the surface, when it occurs and how the condition changes. An industry label or a maximum-temperature value does not define the complete exposure.

  • Separate continuous service from startup, shutdown, cleaning and idle periods.
  • Identify whether the surface stays dry, becomes intermittently wet or is immersed.
  • Record known process media without estimating missing concentration or composition.

Describe particle movement, impact direction, vibration, outdoor weather, solar exposure and cleaning practices where they affect the same zone. Combined mechanisms should remain separate decision inputs rather than being reduced to one label.

Separate the protection objectives

State whether the primary need is corrosion control, wear resistance, thermal control, solar-heat reduction, release behaviour or a defined combination. One function should not be assumed to provide another; where objectives conflict, evaluate separate layers, zones or systems.

Build an option-elimination matrix

Compare candidate system routes against confirmed substrate, exposure, preparation, application, cure, inspection and maintenance conditions. The purpose is to remove incompatible options before a model-level review, not to award points to products using unknown inputs.

  • Reject routes that cannot tolerate the confirmed exposure.
  • Reject routes whose preparation or cure cannot be achieved in the available work window.
  • Reject routes that block required drainage, movement, cleaning or inspection.

Assign each missing input an owner and verification action. If an unknown could change the system family, keep the recommendation conditional until it is resolved.

Confirm preparation, application, cure and inspection feasibility

Check whether the selected route can be prepared, mixed, applied, cured and inspected on the actual geometry. Use a representative trial only to answer defined application or compatibility questions; do not treat it as proof of service life or broad performance.

Document the recommendation boundary

The selection record should list confirmed inputs, rejected routes, unresolved conditions, the proposed next technical review and the evidence required before release. Product-specific instructions and the approved project specification remain controlling.
