Industrial Equipment Spray-Coating Checklist

Use this checklist to coordinate spray coating on fabricated industrial equipment from work-area handover through preparation, masking, access, application sequence, inspection, cure and assembly release. The approved product instructions and project method statement control all model-specific values.

Confirm pre-job handover and drawing requirements

Identify the equipment, work zones, coating boundaries, interfaces with adjacent systems and the drawing or specification revision in force. Confirm safe access, lighting, ventilation, nearby work and protection of completed surfaces.

  • Mark surfaces included and excluded from coating.
  • Identify assembly faces and components requiring access later.
  • Assign preparation, application and inspection release roles.
  • Record unresolved fabrication or repair work before coating starts.

Accept substrate preparation before masking

Inspect cleanliness, surface condition and difficult details using the project acceptance method. Close defects that would be concealed by masking or coating, and protect accepted zones from dust, moisture, handling and delay.

Mask fits, threads, labels and protected interfaces

Use the drawing and assembly plan to identify machined fits, threads, electrical parts, identification plates, sealing faces, openings and other no-coat zones. Masking should remain secure during spraying and be removable without damaging accepted edges.

Confirm material and spray-equipment readiness

Verify material identity and condition against approved documents. Confirm that the spray equipment, hoses, controls and application setup are suitable for the defined work, while leaving mixing, thinning, pressure, usable time and other values to product-specific instructions.

Plan the sequence for edges, welds and shadow zones

Break complex equipment into traceable zones and plan how overspray, access movement and changing orientation will affect adjacent work. Give explicit attention to details that cannot be covered or inspected from the primary spray direction.

  • Check backsides, recesses, brackets and attachment interfaces.
  • Confirm that the operator and inspector can reach the same critical zones.
  • Change orientation or access method before a missed area is hidden by later work.

Keep a consistent zone map for each layer. Release the next step only after the required inspection is complete and the product-specific recoat condition is satisfied.

Inspect each layer and the final finish

Check visible continuity, difficult geometry, edges, masking boundaries, repair areas and any project-specified measurements. Record sagging, dry spray, contamination, pinholes or mechanical damage without treating appearance alone as proof of protection.

Control cure, handling and assembly release

Protect the work for the approved cure period and prevent lifting, packing or assembly from marking or bridging uncured areas. Remove masking carefully, inspect boundary edges and verify that coated parts can be assembled without damaging the system.

Record nonconformance, repair and closeout

Trace each defect and repair to its equipment zone and repeat the relevant inspection after rework. The closeout record should show material identity, work sequence, releases, repairs and outstanding limitations rather than only final photographs.

State checklist limits and Product-specific instructions

This checklist does not set mixing ratio, thinning, spray pressure, film build, environmental limits or cure time. Use the approved technical data and project procedure for those requirements.
