Inspection objective
Set the survey boundary and the decision it must support: further diagnosis, access planning, a repair scope, an insulation review or a protective-system review. Record exclusions so an uninspected section is not treated as an accepted section.
Pre-entry information
Collect available kiln drawings, lining history, repair records, operating state, cleaning status and known access restrictions. Mark information that is unavailable instead of filling gaps with typical kiln assumptions.
- Identify the inspected kiln section and direction of travel.
- Record whether observations were made during operation, cooling or shutdown.
- List recent maintenance or process changes that may affect visible evidence.
- Assign an owner and follow-up route to every unresolved input.
Safe access and operating state
Confirm isolation, access release, safe observation positions and the limitations created by guards, platforms, shell movement or retained heat. The inspection record should distinguish surfaces viewed directly from those inferred from a distance or hidden from view.
Create the kiln zone map
Divide the kiln into traceable circumferential and longitudinal zones using plant-recognized landmarks. Photographs, notes and later scope drawings should use the same IDs so a condition can be found again.
Hot zones
Record visible or instrument-observed differences as qualitative evidence, together with operating state and measurement context. Do not convert a surface observation into a heat-loss value.
Transitions
Map changes in lining, shell geometry, previous repair, coating, access or process zone because they can change both condition and treatment boundary.
External details
Locate rings, welds, openings, seals, fasteners, supports, guards and adjacent structures that affect access, movement, drainage or application continuity.
Shell and lining boundary
Record where the lining type or condition is known to change and where shell observations may be influenced by an internal boundary. If the lining condition cannot be verified from the available access, list the uncertainty rather than assigning a cause to an external indication.
Joints, seals and transitions
Inspect joints, seals, openings, repair edges and changes between treated and untreated surfaces. Note dust escape, staining, deposits, movement marks or discontinuity as observations; diagnosis requires the corresponding process and lining evidence.
Supports, tyres and deformation clues
Record the relationship between visible shell condition and tyres, rollers, supports, welds and other structural details. Photograph apparent distortion, rubbing or movement from repeatable viewpoints, but refer structural significance to qualified plant personnel.
Deposits and surface condition
Map dust, scale, oil, moisture, old repairs, loose layers and contamination by zone. Distinguish material that can be removed during preparation from a recurring source that must be controlled before any surface work begins.
Thermal observations and their limits
Keep instrument, viewing position, surface condition, operating state and time linked to each thermal observation. One reading or image does not establish internal lining condition, heat flow, energy use or the expected result of an insulation system.
Access and maintainability
Mark areas obstructed by platforms, guards, drive components and plant services. Define how inspection, application and later maintenance could reach each proposed zone without blocking required movement, access or identification.
Evidence package
Compile the zone map, photographs, observation table, operating context, access constraints and unresolved-input register as one controlled package. Use consistent file names and captions that state what is visible and where it is located.
Scope decision and escalation
Use the evidence to decide whether the site is ready for thermal investigation, repair planning, preparation trials or a system review. Hold the scope where lining status, movement, structural condition, access or operating information could materially change the decision.
Scope limits
This checklist does not quantify heat loss, energy savings, deformation acceptance or coating performance. It gathers the kiln-specific evidence needed before those separate engineering and product decisions are made.
