Chimney and Flue Corrosion-Protection Application Workflow

Application planning begins after the gas-path environment and corrosion mechanism have been investigated. This guide converts confirmed condensation locations, drainage paths, joints, penetrations and access constraints into preparation, application and continuity-control zones. Confirm the operating-environment review is complete

Before defining application work, confirm the known gas-path zones, wet and dry periods, shutdown conditions, washing or cleaning exposure, visible deposits and locations where condensate may form or travel. Unresolved chemistry or dew-point questions remain investigation inputs, not application assumptions.

Map condensation, liquid traps, and drainage

Trace where liquid can originate, run, collect and drain across vertical and horizontal sections. Mark low points, changes in section, platforms, stiffeners, expansion details and internal obstructions that can interrupt drainage or hide retained moisture.

  • Separate the condensation source from downstream wet areas.
  • Record blocked or uncertain drainage paths.
  • Identify areas that cannot be dried or inspected.
  • Escalate active leakage or structural deterioration before coating work.

Divide access and preparation into controllable zones

Plan scaffolding, ventilation, lighting, containment and work sequence so each zone can be reached, prepared and inspected. Avoid accepting an accessible face as evidence for backsides, overhead details or restricted passages.

Treat joints, penetrations, and transitions as separate details

Expansion joints, seams, welds, nozzles, supports and penetrations may move, trap liquid or create sharp geometry. Define preparation and continuity checks for each detail while preserving its intended movement or drainage function.

Plan the application sequence around continuity

Set zone boundaries and layer sequence so adjacent work can form a continuous system without burying unaccepted preparation or leaving inaccessible termination edges. Product-specific mixing, layer build and cure requirements must come from the verified documents for the selected system.

Inspect coverage and repair local discontinuities

Use traceable visual and specified project checks across open surfaces, edges, welds, overhead areas and difficult details. Record repairs against the original zone map and reinspect them before access or containment is removed.

Define return-to-service and maintenance boundaries

Close preparation, application, repair and release records before returning the gas path to service. Future inspection should revisit condensation paths, drainage, joints and repaired areas; this guide does not prescribe an interval or predict service life.
