Purpose and limits of the readiness check
The readiness check establishes whether the concrete surface and its repair boundaries are sufficiently understood for the next technical review. It separates observable substrate condition from the later decisions about chemical resistance, material compatibility and protective-system selection.
Define who can release each area and which project documents govern acceptance. This guide deliberately avoids numerical moisture, strength or crack limits because those values must come from the authorized specification and verified site conditions.
Define the structure and exposure boundary
Map tanks, channels, floors, walls, sumps, joints, penetrations and connected drainage as traceable zones. A single structure can contain different wetting, cleaning and access conditions, so each zone needs its own condition record and release status.
Immersion zones
Record the normal liquid boundary, low points, sediment areas, inlets and outlets. Confirm the actual medium and cleaning history separately; visible staining alone does not identify the exposure chemistry.
Splash and wet-dry zones
Mark variable liquid levels, splash paths, washdown areas and surfaces that repeatedly dry and re-wet. These transitions often require more detailed condition and moisture evidence than a continuously dry face.
Vapour, drainage and transition zones
Trace vapour contact, condensate routes, overflows, drains, wall-to-floor changes and interfaces with steel or embedded items. Keep transition details visible in the work map rather than averaging them into a broad area.
Collect pre-inspection records
Gather available drawings, service history, cleaning methods, leakage records, previous repair information and access constraints. Identify which surfaces were hidden or still in service during the survey, and carry those limitations into the readiness decision.
- Assign stable location IDs to photographs and observations.
- Distinguish original concrete from known repair material.
- Record recent washing, drainage or process changes that can affect visible moisture.
- List unavailable exposure or substrate information as an open item.
Map concrete condition and previous repairs
Survey the concrete before preparation removes useful evidence. Map weak laitance, friable areas, deposits, surface loss, voids, staining, previous patches and changes in texture, then photograph both the overall location and the detail condition.
Sound appearance at the centre of a patch does not prove that its edge or bond transition is ready. Treat uncertain repair materials and hollow or unsound areas as separate hold points.
Trace moisture and active water paths
Look for leakage, seepage, damp boundaries, efflorescence, blocked drainage and moisture emerging through cracks or penetrations. Record the likely direction of travel and whether the source is active, intermittent or unresolved.
Drying the visible face does not correct an active water path. Source control, drainage repair or further investigation may be required before surface preparation can be accepted.
Inspect cracks, joints, penetrations and interfaces
Map cracks by location and visible behaviour without assigning structural significance from appearance alone. Identify intended movement joints, construction joints, pipe penetrations, embedded steel and changes between concrete and other substrates.
The handover record should state whether each detail is to remain movable, be repaired by another discipline or enter a separately designed treatment. Do not bridge active movement or seal an unidentified water path as a routine coating-preparation step.
Separate repair work from surface preparation
Define the boundary between removing unsound concrete, rebuilding defects and preparing sound concrete for a later protective layer. Repair geometry, compatibility and cure requirements belong to the approved repair procedure; mechanical cleaning cannot substitute for that work.
Release repaired areas only when their edges, surface condition and transition to adjacent concrete can be inspected. Record any area that remains inaccessible or visually ambiguous.
Remove weak layers and contamination without hiding evidence
Remove dust, weak laitance, curing compounds, release agents, deposits and other contaminants using a method suitable for the confirmed concrete condition. The chosen process should expose a consistent sound surface without driving contaminants deeper or obscuring cracks and repair edges.
Where oil, process residue or unknown material is present, confirm the cleaning route and evidence of removal before broad preparation continues. An apparently uniform profile is not proof that contamination has been eliminated.
Verify prepared-condition consistency
Inspect the prepared surface under adequate lighting and access. Compare open pores, local repairs, corners, vertical faces, joints and difficult details with the agreed preparation boundary, and repeat cleaning where loose material or dust has returned.
Keep preparation acceptance separate from product application. Compatibility, material selection and project-specific application values remain subject to the authorized technical review.
Apply readiness hold points
Use explicit disposition categories so unresolved conditions cannot disappear inside general progress notes.
Proceed
- The zone and exposure boundary are identified.
- Repairs and active water paths within the work boundary are resolved.
- The prepared surface is accessible, clean and consistently documented.
Hold for repair or drying
- Unsound concrete, uncertain repair edges or retained contamination remain.
- Active moisture or drainage conditions can still affect the surface.
- The authorized repair or drying requirement has not been completed.
Escalate for engineering or exposure review
- Crack behaviour, structural condition, hidden deterioration or media identity could change the scope.
- A numerical acceptance decision is required but no approved criterion is available.
- The proposed treatment would cross an unresolved joint, substrate or service boundary.
Assemble the preparation handover record
Close each zone with its location map, as-found photographs, repair disposition, moisture-path record, preparation method, prepared-condition photographs, open items and release authority. The record should allow the application team to identify exactly what was accepted and what remains excluded.
Scope limits
This guide does not select a DAYU-X product, determine chemical compatibility, prescribe repair materials or certify structural fitness. Confirm the actual medium, substrate evidence, authorized criteria and project-specific protective-system requirements before application.
